Examination
True intension of the Examination in the present education system is providing a platform for the
students to reveal the ability of their understanding skills and to show them how much they have
improved themselves from previous level. This methodology has been used to scale them up and monitor their consistent improvements.
In similar fashion, Safety Nunchakku Examination methodology is providing platform to the
practitioners of Safety Nunchakku-kas how much they are learning from the Systematic training in
the defined period and how much they levitate themselves from one level to another level. Their
progress and performance has been monitored and awarded by "Belt Examination Method" of
Safety Nunchakku.
Each and Every Belt examination imposes 10 –different types of Exams to the Practitioners. Safety
Nunchakku-kas should participate and perform well enough to prove their understanding skills to get
promotion to "NEXT BELT". Safety Nunchakku introduces 6 colour belts to the Practitioners before
they reach "BLACK BELT".
Black Belt is a remarkable milestone for each practitioner. This Black belt exam includes the above
mentioned 10 different types of exams as well as Written Exam also. Safety Nunchakku-kas should
show their ability and demonstrate knowledge to gain minimum average marks to achieve the Black
Belt.
METHOD OF ASSESSING STANDARD – COLOUR BELTS
Article 1: SAFETY NUNCHAKU SCORING METHOD
In order to assess the standard of the practitioner of safety nunchaku, the below mentioned exams
have been implemented by the Safety nunchaku Grand Master, Technical Director of WSNO, Soshihan
S Kothandan.
As explained in the Colour Belt Syllabus, after completing the training, the instructors have to conduct
exams as per the schedule given below ( Appendix 7) and the marks has to be informed to the Safety
Nunchaku Head office to get certificate & belts. The Belts & Certificates will be issued by the
Safety Nunchaku Head Office.
Each belt needs 2 hours of training per day to attend next Belt Examination
To get 6 belts, all the below mentioned 10 types of marks has to be obtained for each belt.
- 10 marks - Basics – To perform each move separately
- 10 marks - Combinations – with other techniques
- 10 marks - Kata as per the belt syllabus
- 10 marks - Kumite – About Safety nunchaku
- 10 marks - Target (1) – Hitting on the thrown object ( Having single chaku in one hand
and hitting on the thrown target )
- 10 marks - Target (2) – Hitting on the thrown object ( Having both chaku in one hand and
hitting the thrown target)
- 10 marks - Target (3) – Hitting on the hanging object ( Having single chaku in one hand
and hitting on the target on the stand while walking)
- 10 marks - Own style technique – creativity
- 10 marks - Viva voice (Theory)
- 10 marks - if participated in District, State, National or international tournaments, its
attendance & conduct will be given this marks.
Article 2: BASICS – PRIMARY TENCHNIQUES
Will be asked to perform separately or combine, the basic techniques of safety nunchaku like –
Grip, block, Catch, Swing, Punch, Strike, Chop, Spin, Direction, Eye sight, Stance, Roll, Circle, Flip.
Article 3: COMBINATION – WITH OTHER TECHNIQUES
Should perform the above metioned (Article 2) techniques in the demanded combination. Marks
will be given based on, Good timing, Rhythm, speed, Balance, Focus of power and direction (clock
wise). The safety nunchaku should be in control of the contestant. Marks will be deducted if it slips
down.
Article 4: KATA – AS PER THE BELT SYLLABUS
To perform the WSNO approved Origin Katas, Fundamental Katas, Superior Katas that are framed
by Safety nunchaku Grand Master, Technical Director of WSNO, Soshihan S Kothandan. Kata should
be as per the Belt syllabus and the Kata rules are to be followed.
Article 5 : SAFETY NUNCHAKU -- OWN STYLE / CREATIVITY
- Own style match is conducted for both men & women separately
- Match will be conducted based on belt / height of the contestant
- For each contestant, one minute is allotted to exhibit their talent in free style safety nunchaku
( the time allotted is subject to change)
- Once the contestant comes to the centre point of the match area, the referee blows the whistle
& begins the own style.
- After crossing one minute, the referee stops the performance by blowing whistle from score
table. Techniques done after the referee blowing the whistle from the score table (allotted time,
1 minute) is not considered for marks.
- After the performance, the contestant should stand in the starting point for marks. Should bow
the referee & leave the place after hearing the marks.
- Should not repeat same techniques. Techniques must be of new combination
- Should know & understand the techniques. The moves of the safety nunchaku should not be as
they like.
- Karate techniques and kicks are prohibited.
- While doing own style safety nunchaku, contestant can start with either hand and end in either.
- One mark will be deducted if the safety nunchaku slips down or catch is missed.
- If the safety nunchaku touch the floor while doing, marks will not be reduced.
- Half marks will be deducted each time when the contestant cross / comes out of the match area.
Article 6: KUMITE
Has to follow the Kumite rules that are framed by Safety nunchaku Grand Master, Technical Director
of WSNO, Soshihan S Kothandan.
Article 7: TARGET PRACTICE (1)(Holding single chaku in one hand and hitting on the thrown target)
Hitting the thrown Ball / CD/ One rupee coin / vegetable / fruit.
Should begin when the examiner say START and should follow the below mentioned methods to
perform the target exam. Not necessary to change the hands for safety nunchaku. The hands to be
used will be instructed by the examiner and the contestant has to hit the thrown target by performing
the combination technique. Should not stop swinging the safety nunchaku.
- Using Right hand, Forward Grip and hit target in 5 chances.
- Using Right hand, Reverse Grip and hit target in 5 chances.
- Using Left hand, Forward Grip and hit target in 5 chances.
- Using Left hand, Reverse Grip and hit target in 5 chances.
- Half marks will be given each time when the contestant hits the thrown object. 10 marks will be
given on hitting 20 times without fail.
- Each time while hitting the target the contestant should perform different combination technique.
- That is, can perform 2 or 3 technique in single hand while hitting.
Article 8: TARGET PRACTICE (2)
(Having both chaku in one hand and hitting the thrown target)
Hitting the thrown Ball / CD/ One rupee coin / vegetable / fruit.
Should begin when the examiner say START and should follow the below mentioned methods
to perform the target exam.
- To hold both the chakus in both (right / left) hand and throw one hand on top.
While it comes down, should hold in other hand and hit the thrown object. Should
hit the object through forward grip or reverse grip within the 10 given chances.
- To hold both the chakus in both (right / left) hand and throw one hand on sideways
and should hold in other hand and hit the thrown object. Should hit the object through
forward grip or reverse grip within the 10 given chances.
- To hold both the chakus in both (right / left) hand and throw one hand on upside
down and should hold in other hand and hit the thrown object. Should hit the
object through forward grip or reverse grip within the 10 given chances.
Half marks will be given each time when the contestant hits the thrown object. 10 marks
will be given on hitting 20 times without fail.
Article 9: TARGET PRACTICE (3)
( Having single chaku in one hand and hitting on the target on the stand while walking )
To hit the Target that is connected to the rope with target stand in different heights
Should begin when the examiner say START and should follow the below mentioned methods to
perform the target exam. Not necessary to change the hands for safety nunchaku. The hands to be used will
be instructed by the examiner and the contestant has to hit the thrown target by performing the combination
technique. Should not stop swinging the safety nunchaku.
- Using Right hand, Forward Grip and hit target in 5 chances.
- Using Right hand, Reverse Grip and hit target in 5 chances.
- Using Left hand, Forward Grip and hit target in 5 chances.
- Using Left hand, Reverse Grip and hit target in 5 chances.
- Each time while hitting the target the contestant should perform different combination technique.
That is, can hit the target by doing 2 techniques with one hand or can do the changeover
technique and hit the target with the hand that was said by the examiner.
- Cannot take time more than one second to hit the target after performing combination
technique. No marks will be given.
- Each target has to be hit only once. Marks will not be given if repeated on missing,
- Half marks will be given each time when the contestant hits the object. 10 marks will
be given on hitting 20 times without fail.
Article 10: PENALTIES
TARGET PRACTICE (1)
- Points will be deducted if the contestant loses the control or if exceeds the speed limit.
- No marks will be given if the target is hit just by doing only one technique or if halts for more
than a second.
- Marks will be deducted if the safety nunchaku slips down or thrown away or if miss the target. 2
marks will be reduced if safety nunchaku slips down twice and 3 marks for thrice. If slips down for
the fourth time, the contestant will be disqualified all his marks will be nullified.
TARGET PRACTICE (2)
- Points will be deducted if the contestant loses the control or if exceeds the speed limit.
- Marks will be deducted if the safety nunchaku slips down or thrown away or if miss the target. 2
marks will be reduced if safety nunchaku slips down twice and 3 marks for thrice. If slips down for
the fourth time, the contestant will be disqualified all his marks will be nullified.
TARGET PRACTICE (3)
- Points will be deducted if the contestant loses the control or if exceeds the speed limit.
- If the safety nunchaku hits the rope or the stand, minus (-1) marks will be given.
- Each time while hitting the target the contestant should perform different combination technique.
- Marks will be deducted if the safety nunchaku slips down or thrown away or if miss the target. 2
marks will be reduced if safety nunchaku slips down twice and 3 marks for thrice. If slips down for
the fourth time, the contestant will be disqualified all his marks will be nullified.
Score Counting Method: The penalty marks will be deducted from the scored marks and the difference
will be counted.
Example: 16 out of 20 targets are hit properly : 16 x .5 = +8 (score marks)
Once touched the rod : (-)1 x 1 = (-)1
Touched the rope twice : (-)1 x 2 = (-)2
First time slips down : (-)1 x 1 = (-)1
Penalty marks : 4 x (-)1 = (-)4
Contestant score : 8 – 4 = (+)4
Article 11: SAFETY NUNCHAKU VIVA VOISE (THEORY)
The Examiner will ask 10 questions from the belt syllabus. One mark will be given for each correct answer.
Article 12: MARKS FROM INSTRUCTORS.
- Marks given according to the participation in District / state / national / international tournaments.
- Marks for being Judge or Referee in recognised tournament.
- Attendance, conduct and contribution towards the art of safety nunchaku will earn marks.

CRITERIA TO DECISIVE THE STANDARD OF
"BLACK BELT" EXAM
SAFETY NUNCHAKU SCORING METHOD
The black belt exams will be conducted by the committee which is headed by Technical Director, WSNO,
Soshihan S Kothandan. The same list of assessment as in Appendix 6 will be followed
- 1st EXAM – PRACTICALS – 100 MARKS
- 2nd EXAM – WRITTEN EXAM – 100 MARKS
The total marks obtained by the contestant in the above two exams will be divided by two and the
net number will be taken as the marks scored. Based on this mark, the Belt & certificate will be awarded
by Grand Master Soshihan S Kothandan.
- Minimum of 1 year span is required to move on from one DAN to the other. Will be allowed for
next.
- Black belt exam only upon the recommendation of the Instructor.
1st EXAM – PRACTICALS – 100 MARKS
- 10 marks - Basics – To perform each move separately
- 10 marks - Combinations – with other techniques
- 10 marks - Kata as per the belt syllabus
- 10 marks - Kumite – Safety nunchaku bout
- 10 marks - Target (1) – Hitting on the thrown object
- 10 marks - Target (2) – Hitting on the thrown object

- 10 marks - Participation in District, State, National & international tournaments, being Judge
& Coach in tournaments will be given this marks.
- 10 marks - Participation in District, State, National & international tournaments
2nd EXAM – WRITTEN EXAM – 100 MARKS (Answering 5 question in the same paper)
