HOLDING GRIP
In the art of safety nunchaku, it is very important to have grip in holding safety nunchaku. The basic of safety nunchaku lies in its holding.
- Holding with the palm facing upward.
- Holding with palm facing downward.
- Holding with palm turned to sideways towards the body.
- Holding with palm turned to sideways opposite side.
BLOCKS
Though blocking with safety nunchaku is not that easy, proper training will help to block the strikes of the opponent. (Training has to be given in such a way that blocking should be followed by attacks).
- Blocking by holding both chakus in single hand.
- Holding both chakus in both hands and blocking simultaneously.
- Holding each chaku in each hand and blocking.
The above 3 blocking are the basic and the rest are framed with these as foundation.
SWING
The motive of safety nunchaku is to avoid maximum swings unless necessary, and attacking the opponent. Therefore it is important to keep the nunchaku under control while swinging.
- Swinging above head
- Swinging around waist
- Upward swing
- Downward swing
- Sideways swing
CATCH
The "Catching" part plays a vital role in safety nunchaku. That is, in order to bring the safety nunchaku under control before or after attacking the opponent, catching is very important. Therefore, the safety nunchaku should be kept in control each time the technique is used.
The below mentioned 2 types of catches are the basics
- Catching the chaku which is thrown.
- Catching the chaku that is thrown against opponent ie., catching the other cahku apart from the one held in hand

PUNCH
In the art of safety nunchaku, Punching is very difficult technique. Unless trained properly, and have a good control over the safety nunchaku, this technique is not possible. The below are the two types of punches.
- Holding both chakus in only and punching with one chaku.
- Punching by Holding two chakus in two hands
There are many subdivsions basis the above two methods.
STRIKE
This is an important technique in the art of safety nunchaku. But this can be changed into an easy & facilitating technique with a proper training and speedy but wise approach. Practice is required to hit the opponent forcefully on the specific spot. That is, the opponent should not be in a position to guess as to from which direction he is being attacked. At the same time, control on the equipment is also essential.
Below are the six types of strikes
- Stright Downward Strike
- Stright Upward Strike
- Cross Downward Strike
- Cross Upward Strike
- Flat Strike
- Flat Reverse Strike
There are many subdivisions basis the above six ways.
CHOP
Chopping in safety nucnhaku is done, when the opponent is very close by. (The above technique can be adopted when the opponent is at a distance). When close by, before the opponent tries to attack, he can be knocked down using this method. Which means, before the opponent could realize the direction from which he is being chopped, will either run away or break down.
The below mentioned chopping methods are very important.
- Chopping by holding both chakus in single hand.
- Chopping by holding one chaku in one hand and the second one in the other hand.

SPIN
This technique of safety nunchaku is used to increase the spead of the safety nunchaku, to threaten the opponent and to do the other technique more rapidly. This is the most attractive technique when done in the public.
There are 8 types of spinning
- Outside Downward Spin
- Outside Upward Spin
- Inside Downward Spin
- Inside Upward Spin
- Front Flat Bottom spin
- Front Flat Bottom Reverse spin
- Front Flat Top spin
- Front Flat Top Reverse spin
Many other spinning can be framed using the above 8 as the basic.
FLIP
The technique of flip in safety nunchaku is spinning it using the thumb finger. That is spinning the safety nunchaku between the four fingers and the thumb finger. This is used by people who want to attract public and perform in a stylish way.
Two main types of flip is mentioned below.
- Spinning the safety nunchaku from bottom left to the right by holding the safety nunchaku between four fingers and thumb finger.
- Spinning the safety nunchaku from bottom right to the left by holding the safety nunchaku between four fingers and thumb finger.
Many other spinning can be framed using the above 8 as the basic.
ROLL
Rolling the safety nunchaku in our wrist. This is used by people who want to attract public and perform in a stylish way.
The below 6 types of Roll are essential.
- Straight from top to steep bottom, rolling through wrist. (Ordinary Grip)
- Straight from bottom to steep top, rolling through wrist. (Reverse Grip)
- In front of the body, from bottom left to right rolling through wrist.
- In front of the body, from bottom right to left rolling through wrist.
- In front of the body, from top (above the head) right to left.
- In front of the body, from top (above the head) left to right.
Having these six as basics, many other rollings can be framed.
CIRCLE
The below mentioned two are important in this technique.
- Rotating from left to right to palm using full hand in front of the body
- Rotating from right to left to palm using full hand in front of the body.
This technique is used to attack the opponent by keeping him in dark. Also this is the technique used to attract public.
DIRECTIONS
Using the clock, training is given on all directions. The listed 8 directions are suitable for safety nunchaku training.
- 12.00 – Directly in front
- 01.30 – is to the right front corner
- 03.00 – is to the right side from where you started
- 04.30 – is to the right back corner
- 06.00 – is directly to the back from where you started
- 07.30 – is to the left back corner
- 09.00 – is to the left side from where you started
- 10.30 – is to the left front corner
These eight directions are done to enhance the memory power and concentration and to understand the katas in a better way. In the exams of safety nunchaku, instead of giving the directions, candidates are tested by giving the time.
STANCE
In any sport, the position taken in the sport area is called as Stance. For example, in the foot ball match, the goal keeper takes the position calculating the distance, direction, the speed of the ball and the position of the opponent. Similarly, in the art of safety nunchaku too, the position taken to defend our self or to attack the opponent is called as stance.
Since many of the martial art trained cadets intend to learn safety nunchaku, have given the Japanese names of the stance to facilitate them.
- Hachi Heiko Dachi
- Moto Dachi (Half forward stance)
- Zen Kutsu Dachi (Forward stance)
- Nekko Ashi Dachi (cat stance)
- Sanchin Dachi (Lizard stance)
- Sagi Ashi Dachi
- Kosa Dachi (cross stance)
- Kokutsu Dachi
- Shiko Dachi (Horse Stance)
- Naifanchin Dachi
- Remoji Dachi
The above given eleven stance must be used in safety nunchaku training. Therefore, every kata of safety nunchaku will carry different types of stance in them. In the same way, at time of danger, based on the circumstance and the position of the enemy, stance can be used to safe guard our self from the enemy.
